George, a 40 year old, white male, experienced panic attacks and phobias since his twenties. He smoked marijuana and used LSD on numerous occasions. He had his first panic attack while smoking marijuana.
George stopped using street drugs but continued to experience panic attacks that waxed and waned for no apparent reason. He was artistically inclined and began painting pictures. Not being able to make a living at this, he became a contractor for minor housing renovations. He was able to make a modest living, but the increasing frequency of panic attacks led to phobias. He became fearful of riding in a car or a truck with fellow workers. He was fearful that if he had a panic attack, they would see it. If he asked to be let out of the car or truck, he was fearful they would laugh at him or think he was a "sissy." He experienced increasing difficulty working with anyone else on any project. He declined more and more work. He came to my office at the end of his rope just squeaking by on a near poverty level income. He was desperate to get over these frightening attacks but fearful he could not afford private treatment.
What happens to George? Read more in Dr. Granoff's book, Help! I Think I'm Dying.
